Our Story

workhourscalculator.co.uk was born out of a simple frustration: every existing work hours calculator on the web was either bloated with ads, required creating an account, or silently tracked and stored user data on remote servers. We knew there had to be a better way.

We set out to build the tool we wished existed — one that opens instantly, calculates accurately, and treats your data as none of our business. Because frankly, it isn't. Your work schedule, your pay rate, and your hours are your private information, and we designed every aspect of this calculator around that principle.

What started as a side project quickly grew into something bigger. Word spread through workplaces, forums, and group chats. People told their colleagues. Freelancers shared it with clients. Small business owners started using it to cross-check payroll. Today, WorkHoursCalculator is trusted by thousands of workers and businesses across more than 50 countries.

Despite that growth, our philosophy hasn't changed one bit. We're still a small, independent project. We still don't collect your data. We still don't show intrusive ads. And we still believe the best tools are the ones that respect their users.

The Problem We Solve

Calculating work hours sounds simple — until you factor in varying start and end times, unpaid breaks, overtime thresholds, different pay rates for weekends and holidays, and the need to keep records for tax or employment disputes. Manually crunching these numbers on paper or a basic spreadsheet is tedious and error-prone.

Most online alternatives suffer from at least one of these issues:

Forced Account Creation Requiring emails and passwords just to add up some numbers.
Hidden Subscriptions Advertising "free" tools that lock features behind paywalls.
Data Harvesting Selling or sharing your timesheet data with third parties.
Ad-Heavy Experience Pop-ups, banners, and auto-playing videos that slow you down.
Slow & Clunky Interfaces Bloated frameworks that take ages to load on mobile.
No Export Options Forcing you to retype everything into another system.

We solve all of these problems at once. No account. No paywall. No tracking. No ads that block your workflow. Just a clean, fast calculator that does exactly what you need — and nothing you don't.

Our Core Values

Privacy by Design

We didn't bolt privacy on as an afterthought — we built it into the architecture. Every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is transmitted. Ever. We can't see your data because we never receive it.

Speed & Simplicity

No loading spinners. No multi-step wizards. Open the page, punch in your times, get your results. We obsess over performance because your time is literally what we're calculating.

Accessibility for All

Whether you're a warehouse worker on a phone, an office manager on a desktop, or a freelancer with a tablet — the calculator adapts to you. No downloads, no app store, no compatibility issues.

Honesty & Transparency

We're upfront about what the tool can and can't do. We clearly state that it's for estimation, not legal advice. We don't overpromise. We don't use dark patterns. What you see is what you get.

Global Usability

Labor laws differ everywhere. While we can't replace local legal counsel, we've designed the calculator to be flexible enough for 12/24 hour formats, various overtime rules, and different pay structures worldwide.

Clean Engineering

We write clean, efficient code. No bloated frameworks, no unnecessary dependencies. The calculator is lightweight by design — which means it loads fast, runs smooth, and leaves a tiny digital footprint.

How It Works Technically

We think transparency matters — not just with our policies, but with our technology too. Here's a plain-English explanation of what happens when you use the calculator:

You open the page.

Your browser downloads the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files from our CDN. After that, your browser has everything it needs — no further network requests are required for calculations.

You enter your times.

As you type start times, end times, and break durations, JavaScript processes your input in real-time. All computation happens on your CPU using your browser's built-in JavaScript engine.

Results appear instantly.

Regular hours, overtime hours, and pay estimates are calculated using standard arithmetic and displayed immediately. No server round-trip, no loading state.

Data saves locally (optional).

If your browser supports Local Storage, your entries are saved automatically so they survive page refreshes. This data lives in a folder on your device managed by your browser — not on our servers.

You export if you want.

CSV and PDF files are generated entirely in your browser using client-side libraries. The file is created in memory and downloaded directly to your device. We never see it.

The Only Network Requests

The only data that leaves your browser after the initial page load is from third-party CDNs (Google Fonts, Font Awesome, Tailwind CSS) serving static assets. These requests contain no timesheet data, no personal identifiers, and no tracking parameters.

Who Uses WorkHoursCalculator

Our users come from all walks of working life. Here are some of the people who rely on the calculator every day:

  • Be transparent about limitations.
  • Respond to your questions and feedback.
  • Maintain a clean, ad-light experience.

We Will Never

  • Collect, store, or sell your timesheet data.
  • Require an account or email address.
  • Add paywalls to existing free features.
  • Run Google Analytics or similar trackers.
  • Show pop-up ads or auto-playing videos.

How We're Sustained

A fair question: if the tool is free and we don't collect data to sell, how do we keep the lights on? The honest answer is that running WorkHoursCalculator costs very little. We use efficient static hosting, have no server-side infrastructure for user data, and keep our dependencies minimal.

Our costs are limited to domain registration, CDN bandwidth, and the time we invest in development and maintenance. We cover these through non-intrusive, clearly labeled sponsorship placements on the page — never pop-ups, never deceptive links, and never anything that compromises your experience or privacy.

If the day ever comes where we consider adding premium features, we will never take away functionality that is currently free. The core calculator — entering times, calculating hours, exporting data — will remain free, always.
